Lesson 1: What is the tooth?

Our teeth are super important in our daily lives, even if we don’t notice it! Every time we smile or eat or speak we are using our teeth!

WHAT IS THE TOOTH?

Each tooth in your mouth is made up of two parts: the Crown, and the Root.

The CROWN is the part of a tooth that we see above your gums! When you smile big, you are showing everyone the crowns of your teeth!

The ROOT is the part of the tooth that cannot be seen below the gum. They keep your teeth in place so they don’t just fall out!

WHAT MAKES UP THE TOOTH?

Each tooth is made up of 4 layers:

  1. ENAMEL: The smooth outer layer of the tooth. It is also the hardest material found in your body so that you can munch and chew! The enamel also gives your teeth their white colour!
  2. DENTINE: The second layer of your tooth. The dentine is a hard, thick layer that makes up the majority of your tooth. The Dentine is also where you feel sensitive to hot and cold!
  3. PULP: The third inner layer of your tooth! The pulp is made up of blood vessels and soft tissue, which makes it very sensitive!
  4. CEMENTUM: The cementum covers your dentine underneath the gums and helps root your tooth to your jawbone!
