Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) At Shen Dental In Vancouver
Q: How much does a visit to the dentist cost?
Your first visit includes a dental exam of your teeth and mouth, X-rays (as many as required by the condition of your teeth and mouth), and any urgent treatment. If no urgent treatment is required, we will suggest a tooth cleaning.
Q: How much does just a cleaning cost?
Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, cleaning/deep cleaning of your teeth will take 15 minutes to one full hour and will cost $46-90. We will also suggest a polishing and fluoridation at an additional cost.
Q: How much does a filling cost?
The cost of a filling depends on the size of the filling, which tooth, and what material is used. After the dentist examines your teeth, we will be able to estimate the cost of your fillings.
Q: How much does a dental crown cost?
Crowns typically cost $1,100-$1,300, depending on complexity and the lab fee. The lab fee depends on the material. Most dental insurance plans cover crowns at 50%, but some won’t cover crowns/bridges/dentures at all.
Q: Do you do white fillings instead of silver fillings?
Yes, we do both white and silver fillings. The dentist will suggest the material based on the position and size required and will explain the benefits. It is your decision which material to use. Most dental insurance plans do not fully cover white filling in back teeth, and you will have to pay the difference.
Q: Do you accept dental benefit plans (insurance)?
Yes, commercial dental plans are accepted at Shen Dental.
We make an effort to collect payment directly from the insurance company (assignment); however, some dental plans require that the patient first pays for the treatment, then the patient is reimbursed by the insurance company. Your dental benefit plans will cover 50-100% of dental costs for certain treatments, but other treatments, such as implants, are not covered. While we will try to estimate the portion paid by your plan, there may be unexpected differences. You are still responsible for any non-payment in whole or in part if the insurance coverage information given is inaccurate or expired. You are responsible for paying the percentage/portion of treatment costs NOT covered by your dental plan at the end of each appointment and paying any difference if applicable (we will send you an updated statement).
We highly recommend you verify your coverage information with the proper department in your company before your first appointment.
For clients insured under the Provincial Ministry of Health, please note that we bill the difference between the Ministry fee and BC Dental Association Fee Guide.
Q: What forms of payment are accepted?
We accept cash, Interac, and credit cards (Visa and MasterCard).
Q: Do you accept payment plans?
Payment plans are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Q: How often should I visit the dentist?
It is recommended to visit your dentist for a routine checkup and cleaning at least twice a year. Depending on your oral health, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits.
Q: What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
If you have a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or a broken crown, contact Shen Dental immediately. We offer emergency appointments to address urgent dental concerns.
Q: What is a root canal, and how much does it cost?
A root canal is a procedure to remove infected tissue from inside a tooth, typically when there is a deep cavity or an infection. The cost can vary, depending on the tooth's location and the complexity of the procedure. We will provide an estimate once the dentist evaluates your condition.
Q: What are the benefits of dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a preventive treatment applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay. They are especially beneficial for children and adults who are prone to cavities. Sealants are a cost-effective way to prevent dental issues in the future.
Q: How can I whiten my teeth?
There are several options for teeth whitening, including professional treatments offered at Shen Dental. The best option depends on the severity of staining and the patient's preferences. Dr. Fisher can guide you in choosing the most effective whitening method.
Q: What are the signs of gum disease?
Common signs of gum disease include red, swollen gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, bad breath, and loose teeth. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to visit the dentist promptly to prevent further complications.
Q: Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, teeth whitening is safe when performed under the guidance of a dentist. Over-the-counter products can sometimes cause tooth sensitivity or gum irritation, but professional treatments are designed to minimize these risks.
Q: Do you offer pediatric dentistry?
Yes, Shen Dental offers pediatric dentistry services, including routine checkups, cleanings, and preventive care tailored to children. It's important for children to start visiting the dentist at an early age to establish good oral hygiene habits.
Q: What can I do if I have sensitive teeth?
If you experience tooth sensitivity, it could be caused by a number of factors, including gum recession or enamel erosion. Your dentist can recommend desensitizing treatments, such as special toothpaste or fluoride applications, to reduce sensitivity.
Q: What is the best way to care for my teeth at home?
Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once daily, and using mouthwash are essential practices for maintaining good oral hygiene. It's also important to avoid sugary foods and drinks, which can contribute to tooth decay.
Q: How can I prevent bad breath?
Bad breath, or halitosis, can be caused by a variety of factors including poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, or gum disease. Regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash can help. If the problem persists, consult Dr. Fisher to rule out any underlying issues.
Q: What is the process for getting dental implants?
Dental implants are a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. The process involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as a root for a replacement tooth or bridge. This procedure typically takes several months, including healing time, but is highly effective for restoring function and appearance.
